Have you ever had such an ecstatic experience only to crash into depression afterwards? I've had those. And I know many people who experienced that, too, including people who were even considered as saints during their time.
It's a very intense experience, one that sometimes you'd wish you never had. Why taste happiness only to plunge into sadness later on? Why go to heaven only to be cast down into hell? There were many times when I felt I'd rather not have experienced such a great happiness only to taste such a deep darkness later on. I also wondered why things like these happen. Could there be an explanation to such an experience?
As I researched about the universal laws that govern our lives, I've discovered that those experiences were indeed valid and could be explained by a universal principle, particularly, the principle of polarity. This principle explains most of our dual experiences on earth, such as night and day, spring and winter, male and female, happiness and sadness. Accessory to such principle is the principle of balance wherein both light and darkness play their part in order to maintain the delicate balance in our world.
So whenever we have this peak experience of happiness, the risk is that there will be an intense period of crisis also following that, like the waves of the sea whose next action would be to crash towards the shore.
Knowing this principle, we are apt to ask, if this is the case, should we not strive to experience intense happiness in order to avoid extreme sadness that follows it?
Fortunately however, it is said that there is a way with which to escape this seemingly inevitable swing of the pendulum. This method however seems not to be easy and need discipline in order to perfect it. If one wishes to follow this method, one needs to raise her perspective and delve into the spiritual.
In reality, it is said that we really can't avoid the opposite swing of the pendulum. But what we can do is to shift its effect in such a way as to avoid its negative consequences in our present realm. Deep huh? Think of it this way, after the pendulum swings to the right, it would swing to the left wouldn't it? We really can't prevent that. What we can do however is to shift our reality so that when it swings to the left, we aren't there anymore to be hit by the pendulum! But just how are we going to do that?
This may surprise you, but this is my theory: In order to avoid the negative effects of the pendulum swinging towards the left, you don't even try to get away. Yes, folks, you accept the swinging pendulum head on and face whatever it is that is bound to happen. Only after you've found the courage to do so will you be able to shift reality,( like vanishing into thin air), and find out that the pendulum has just swung pass thru you without hitting you!
This may sound so profound and confusing, but the real explanation is in one simple word. ACCEPTANCE. Acceptance that leads to courage, and courage that conquers fear. Because in the end, it is fear that brings about all the negative effects of the pendulum.
Whenever we experience such a great bliss, we sometimes fall into the fear of losing what we've found. We fall into fear, and we lose what we have feared to lose. It is not sorrow that is the enemy. There is only one enemy, and that is fear.
What should we be afraid of? If we know how the pendulum of life moves, we know that happiness can't help but come again. It will come, as certain as a new day shall begin. But how can it come to us when we struggle so hard to fight the swing of the pendulum towards the other end? Unless we allow the night to fall, how can we hope for the rising of another dawn?
